With the ASEAN Community set to take effect, Thailand debates how the freedom of movement for skilled labour will affect the country’s burgeoning medical industry.

A new Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) will aim to facilitate free movement of skilled labour across the region as part of the ASEAN Community agreement.

Eight areas of skilled labour will be included in the MRA, including engineers, architects and medical practitioners. The framework was designed to promote a stronger ASEAN workforce that exchanges skills and better meets international standards.

But academics and members of Thailand’s medical community believe there will be very little change.
